During ancient times, the Romans were the first to wear the engagement ring (which they called betrothal or "truth" ring) on the third finger of the left hand. It has become a tradition ever since and the reason for this comes from an Egyptian belief that the vein from this finger leads straight to the heart.

In the middle ages, the "bond" or the Gimmal ring was invented but it was not sure if this was an engagement ring design. They were quite expensive and those who could afford them were buyers of emeralds, rubies, & sapphires. Fede "faith" rings were for the less wealthy ones. These were types of rings in the form of two clasped hands similar to the much modern Celtic claddagh rings.
